The Class 3A state baseball tournament will have great representation from the local area, as all three area clubs qualified for the 16-team field. The state tourney will be played out over the next two weekends, with games on May 21 played at regional sites and the Final Four slated for May 27-28 at Gesa Stadium in Pasco.
The formal filing period for the fall election season opened Monday and runs through the close of office hours Friday. On the Plateau there’s nothing at the local level, as the various City Council and school board positions are all filled.
On May 7 officers were called to a report of windows and a sliding glass door being open at a residence. The reporting party told officers all the windows and the door were shut when they left the house that morning.
Officers pulled over a vehicle that was driving on the sidewalk on May 7. The male driver’s speech was slurred and he said he was recently drinking so officers asked if he would volunteer for field sobriety tests.
On May 4 officers were called to a report of a male masturbating in public. Officers contacted the male, who took off running along SR 410. Officers lost track of the male but later found him again. The man was uncooperative and officers had him at gunpoint.
Officers were alerted to a possible burglary in progress May 2. Witnesses told officers of a strange car and two males who were walking around the home being burgled. Officers stopped a vehicle matching the description of the strange car and contacted the female driver. She didn’t have an ID, but the information she provided was enough for a record check to reveal she had a warrant out of Sumner.
Officers were called May 1 to a report of three males searching through a woman’s purse. When officers arrived on the scene one of the males closed the trunk of the car, and officers found the purse next to the drivers side. Officers contacted the man who closed the trunk, who refused to give officers his name.
The Lake Tapps Incident Locator Program, first launched in 2014 by East Pierce Fire and Rescue, will expand significantly in coming weeks with funding from Cascade Water Alliance.
A snowy winter didn’t stop crews from plowing through State Route 410 over Chinook Pass and reopening the highway a week ahead of the Memorial Day weekend.
Independent and concurrent investigations by the Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office, Pierce County Prosecutor’s Office and Tacoma Police Department regarding the death of Jacqueline Salyers, 32, have been completed. Salyers died from a gunshot wound inflicted by a Tacoma Police officer, who was attempting to arrest a violent felon in the vehicle Salyers was driving.
The goal of Washington’s elections community is civic engagement of our electorate. We work to make voting and participating in the political process accessible, accurate and secure. It has been sad to hear the stories of so many caucus participants who say “never again” after recently enduring caucuses that lasted until after midnight in some cases.
The scriptures tell us to serve one another. Jesus Christ taught this commandment through his doctrine and by his example. Serving our fellowmen is part of being a disciple of Christ and following him.
Not much happy news this past week. Pierce County sees a dramatic increase in homelessness with the annual Point in Time survey, and a house on Lake Tapps was declared a total loss after a basement fire. A spokeswoman for the King County Sexual Assault Resource Center talked to us about sexual assault awareness, and Bonney Lake and Sumner high schools are gearing their teams up for post-season play.
