East Pierce Fire & Rescue is giving its district residents on the outskirts a chance to learn more about the department. On Saturday, March 26, the department will be hosting an open house at the Prairie Ridge fire station from 9 a.m. to noon. A second open house will be hosted April 2 at the Foothills station, also from 9 a.m. to noon.
We’re in the middle of Holy Week today. I was asked, not long ago, about our traditions around Lent. I responded that I grew up in a Christian tradition that didn’t pay any attention to Lent – what that means is that I have no recollection of a time that Lent was mentioned, addressed or explained in any way. Holy Week traditions like Maundy Thursday and Good Friday were not even a blip in our week.

He has seen many communities throughout the nation, so I think his praise is quite a compliment.

East Pierce firefighters are sponsoring three annual Easter Egg hunts around the fire district on Saturday, March 26. All three events are free. The firefighters will be accepting food and monetary donations for local food banks.
For more than three years, a late-night expedition appeared ill-advised and tragic. Now, it’s a criminal case. Last week, Samuel Hoffer was charged with vehicular homicide by the Pierce County Prosecutor’s Office. That development stems from an accident in November 2012 that left Joseph Castro dead in a rural area outside Carbonado.
Today Pierce County Prosecutor Mark Lindquist charged three juvenile males, ages 13, 14 and 17, with rape in the second degree and assault in the second degree for a sexual attack on a 15-year-old girl during a party at her home in Lakebay. The two younger boys pleaded not guilty in Juvenile Court, and a hearing has been set to determine if the 17-year-old will be tried as an adult. All are being held in detention.
During a close loss to Auburn Mountainview, a pair of Spartan girls were triple winners. Jordan Thompson was tops in the 200 meters, long jump and triple jump, while Rhaven Dean won the shot put, discus and javelin.
Starting the season with a bang, Brooke Nelson was the winning pitcher, had three hits and knocked in a pair of runs as the Panthers blasted visiting Mount Rainier. The offense was on full display, as Shelby Welfinger and Melanie Torr also had three hits each; Welfinger drove in a pair of runs and Torr scored twice.

Officers observed two cars at a red light at 192nd ave. One car started revving its engine, and when the light turned green, both took off. One car slowed when it reached the speed limit, but the other kept accelerating.
A work crew discovered a white garbage bag half-filled filled with green vegetation while working. The crew gave the bag to a Pierce County deputy, who brought it to the department station.
Officers were dispatched March 6 to a report of damage to church property on South Prairie Road. The reporting party told officers the frame of the rear door to the church was torn off, a window was broken and it appears as if someone attempted to remove a deadlock bold with a pair of pliers on another door.
