A house on Tacoma Point Drive near Lake Tapps has been severely damage after a fire started yesterday, March 17. A neighbor called East Pierce Fire and Rescue at 4:15 p.m., and crews arrived to the house that was already halfway engulfed in flames.
The Washington State Department of Health will expand its Breastfeeding Friendly Washington program to include free standing birth centers beginning March 21. “We are thrilled to expand the recognition program to include birth centers and recognize the role they play in creating the healthiest next generation,” said Secretary of Health John Wiesman.
The Washington State Attorney General is “disappointed” with the slow progress of a current bill that would raise the smoking age, he said last week. Two companion bills currently in front of the state Legislature would raise the legal smoking age from 18 to 21. If passed, the bills would make it a gross misdemeanor to sell tobacco or vapor products to anyone younger than 21.

Yesterday a jury convicted Qiuordai Lewis Taylor, 18, and Duprea Romon Wilson, who is now 20-years-old, of manslaughter, assault, robbery, kidnapping and burglary for a 2014 home-invasion robbery where an accomplice was shot by a Lakewood homeowner and later died.
The Panther tennis players are ready to start swinging, if the weather gives them a chance this early in the season. Bonney Lake did not see a single victory last year, ending the season with a 0-14 record. The Panthers plan to change that this year.
For the second consecutive year the Bonney Lake and Sumner Special Olympics basketball team celebrated taking state, bringing up their total state championships to four. The Spartans went undefeated throughout the eight subdistrict, district and championship games, and lost only one nonleague Pack the Gym game to Franklin Pierce.

It is my privilege to introduce our newest police officer, Daniel Lovejoy, and welcome him to Sumner. Following his graduation from the Academy this month ,Officer Lovejoy started months of additional training as he prepares to serve our citizens and community. Before becoming a police officer, Daniel served overseas in the Middle East with the Army and through the State Department.
