Four area school districts are celebrating the passing of their various bond issues that were put on the Feb. 9 special election ballot.
With the regular season behind them, seven local prep basketball teams are poised for postseason play. In both the South Puget Sound League’s 3A and 2A divisions, district tournaments begin this week and run through Feb. 20. The boys will tip off tonight, Wednesday, and play second-round games Friday; the girls get rolling Thursday and play again Saturday.
Experts are still learning about Zika virus, and in this time of uncertainty, some some are calling for a quarantine on travelers from areas affected by Zika. I don’t think it’s a good idea.

The Daffodil Festival season was ushered in with the 83rd annual Princess Promenade Friday. The Royal Court, which consists of 23 high school seniors from across Pierce County, were each tapped and proclaimed an official Daffodil Princess at the event. Each received a tiara, sash and traditional Golden Daffodil.
On Feb. 2 officers were called to a report of a mysterious table saw appearing in the reporting party’s driveway. The saw was placed in the property room.
On Feb. 1 officers were contacted over a theft from a car. The reporting party told officers he left his medication in his hoodie in his car, but found both items missing the next morning.
Officers in Covington had custody of a man with a Bonney Lake warrant on Feb. 3. Officers contacted the Covington force in Buckley and took custody of the subject.
Officers were called on Jan. 29 when the reporting party found part of his W-2 form was ripped off in his mail box. A neighbor had a camera pointed at the mailbox and footage will be reviewed.
Officers were contacted Jan. 20 about a man’s credit card being used without his knowledge on Forever21.com. The charge was for the purchase of a gift card.
A significant development during this turbulent time came Feb. 2 when 16 schools from the West Central District decided to create two new leagues in the 3A classification. With that, both the familiar South Puget Sound League 3A and Narrows League will disappear at the close of the current school year.
What book will all of Pierce County be reading this year? Er, five books? In a break from tradition, Pierce County Library System chose five notable works from a single author for its 9th annual Pierce County READS program. Outspoken poet, novelist and screenwriter Sherman Alexie gets the nod as the 2016 featured author.
